Use of Zircon-R for spectroscopy of high-temperature plasma

The M.N. Mikheev Institute of Metal Physics of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the Ural Federal University carried out work on the X-ray image registration by a detector based on microchannel plates.

In this paper, a 160×100 mm two-dimensional position detector for high-temperature plasma spectroscopy was described.

In recent years, domestic specialists have created surveillance systems based on MCP detectors in the ultraviolet range.

When studying X-rays, the problem of registration of a low intensity spectral distribution with suitable statistics and spatial resolution often arises. It is relatively easy to achieve the required statistics and energy resolution parameters using spectral instruments installed in beamlines. However, such instruments are not always available to an ordinary experimentalist. The aim of this work was to create equipment that would be available for conducting research directly in the laboratory.

Zircon-R 2D X-ray detector manufactured by VTC Baspik was used in this work. The detector is designed for registration of X-ray radiation in conditions of its low intensity in 0.1-0.7 nm wavelength range in diffractometers and X-ray spectrometers.

Photons penetrating through a 150 µm thick beryllium window excite a flow of electrons in the MCP, which forms an image on the phosphor screen inside the detector. This image is focused by an optical lens.

This experiment has demonstrated better efficiency of using MCP-based detectors to detect X-ray spectra compared to a one-dimensional position detector.

The Kabardino-Balkarian Scientific Center in cooperation with NRC “Kurchatov Institute” presented the data obtained when studying the possibility of using polycapillary lenses for focusing X-ray radiation from a laser plasma source.

Two devices were used to compare the data results: ALEX-s 1k256 FI DD CCD camera (Germany) and Zircon-R X-ray detector (XRD) manufactured by VTC Baspik under similar conditions. It was concluded that for soft X-ray applications, the Zircon XRD is quite capable of fulfilling the tasks assigned to it.
